Mission Statement

The CCSU Literacy Curriculum will provide students with knowledge and skills that enable them to read, listen to, and observe the ideas of others; think critically about those ideas and communicate their thinking effectively with both the written and spoken word.

The CCSU Literacy Curriculum fosters a culture that believes...

  • Literacy has a powerful place in our society.

Therefore, we will expose students to a variety of quality materials.

  • Academic growth is celebrated with all students.

Therefore, we will develop student understanding about the value of goal-setting within the learning process.

  • Failure is an opportunity to learn.

Therefore, we will encourage students to persevere through challenging situations.

  • Collaboration is essential to the learning process.

Therefore, we will provide students with opportunities to work effectively and respectfully in diverse teams.

  • Using technology to communicate is an absolute necessity in today’s society.

Therefore, we will provide opportunities for students to communicate through technology as well as use it as a tool for research and for presentation of knowledge.

  • Learning is authentic; with real-world applications and audiences.

Therefore, we will provide opportunities for knowledge transfer across and beyond the classroom settings.

  • Instruction is relevant, meaningful, and based upon student needs.

Therefore, we will incorporate research-based, formative assessment practices.

  • Student-centered learning increases motivation.

Therefore, we will provide students with a variety of active, student-centered, multisensory learning activities which incorporate student interests.

  • Assessment is ongoing, diagnostic and informs instruction.

Therefore, we will provide multiple, authentic assessment tools that lead to ongoing, data-based goal setting.
